Restoring immune balance in sepsis
Sepsis is life-threatening reaction to an infection where the body's immune response damages its own tissue and organs. In 2020, the World Health Organization estimated that sepsis affects around 50 million people worldwide every year, causing 11 million deaths, or 20% of all global deaths.
During their time at Wyss Zurich, the hemotune team developed a medical device to combat sepsis that uses proprietary magnetic nanoparticle technology to selectively, efficiently, and gently remove disease-related compounds from patients’ blood. Whereas traditional blood-purification devices use non-specific dialysis filters or adsorber cartridges, the hemotune technology precisely targets and magnetically filters disease-related compounds, allowing purified blood to return to the patient like in dialysis. Additionally, this unique approach enables the simultaneous removal of multiple disease-related compounds, which is not achievable using drugs.
