An interdisciplinary group of surgeons, engineers, and biologists from the Wyss Zurich Translational Center, University of Zurich, and ETH Zurich, has established a new strategy that allows removal of fat from fatty human livers outside the body.

SRF – Zurich researchers succeed in transplanting damaged liver

For the successful transplant, the multidisciplinary research team treated the damaged liver outside the body in a machine for three days and then implanted the recovered organ into the patient.

World premiere: Human liver treated in machine successfully transplanted

The multidisciplinary research team of the Wyss Zurich project Liver4Life has succeeded in a treatment attempt that had never been achieved in the history of medicine until now: it treated an originally damaged human liver in a machine for three days outside a body and then implanted the recovered organ into a cancer patient. One year later, the patient is doing well.
